Learn 4 different ways to help fix your quad strain...even if you've suffered for months or years and your doctor told you nothing could be done to help!

Why is this happening to me?
  • Almost everybody will experience a muscle strain at some point in their life.
  • The Quadriceps muscle is commonly injured in sports. There are 4 parts of the Quads, and one, the Rectus Femoris crosses your hip and knee so is most commonly injured.
  • In Gaelic Football and Hurling, 76% of injuries involved the Lower Limb, with 11% of these involving the quadriceps. Similarly in soccer 70% of injuries involved the Lower Limb with 10% involving the thigh.
  • This happens due to acute stretch while kicking, sudden acceleration or deceleration while sprinting or repetitive overload of the muscle during sport.
  • Muscle injuries can lead to time loss from sport and can become recurrent if not appropriately treated. In GAA 23% of players sustained multiple Lower Limb injuries in the same season.

6 ways a quad strain may be affecting your everyday life

  • Unable to part-take in sport and hobbies you love
  • Reduced mood and poor sleep quality
  • Struggling with tasks such as walking or going up/down stairs
  • Relying on ice packs or painkillers to help get you through the day or games
  • Impaired performance in running, kicking and change of direction
  • Worry about future risks of reinjury and more time loss from your sport

3 things I can do to recover from my quad strain?

  • Make a decision about getting help. So many people procrastinate and hope the pain will just go away, and end up playing with niggles which means you can’t perform fully and will be at risk of another injury.
  • Get real hands on physiotherapy. Physiotherapy is proven to help people with muscle strains. At Sports Physio Ireland, we specialise in getting you back to your best, and beyond.
  • Do the right exercises. The right exercises given by a physiotherapist will help reduce pain and allow you to move freely again. They will address any movement issues that could predispose you to injury.
